We have made us known for our moose running around in the woods. Not least, it was formerly common for German tourists stole our älgskyltar we had the roads to warn motorists of älgrika areas. 01With great size, big appetite. Moose eat – very, very much! During the warmer part of the year, they can eat up to 35 kg per day. During the colder seasons, they are a little quieter with the food, and usually average “only” chew themselves 15 kg  feed daily.

Even large animals have their enemies. A pack of wolves or a black bear is no match for a healthy adult moose as bears and wolves usually go after the young, the sick and old moose instead, those who are less able to defend themselves, in other words. However it is up to moose to fit himself to be bitten by predators – whether it’s a full-grown and fresh or old elk. A wound usually usually become infected , and within two weeks they usually die and become food for predators.

03But predators are not the elk’s greatest enemy . There is another enemy, which is considerably smaller, they also should be more concerned about. Parasitic worms (in Latin; Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), which attacks the host’s brains . The infective larvae get into the elk’s brain and cause significant neurological damage , which ultimately leads to their death.

As in other deer (excluding reindeer ), only the male animal carrying the horn. The horns start small, best dressed rose logs of moose calf in the fall of the first year of life, which can be identified as small bumps behind the eyes. At the age of two constructs bull often simple tips to horn, so-called “handlebar”. 05Just like the elk itself is its horn in all sorts of sizes. The horn consists mainly of a large bone , so in general they weigh too a lot. The bulls develop muscular necks to help hold up the enormous horns. The stately horns of an adult moose can weigh over 18 kg !

06Elks of the female sex, cows , usually gets one to two calves in May or June. On average, a calf weighs between 8 -  15 kg at birth and is growing extremely fast. But despite this, the calves are not so easy to either run or defend themselves against predators, which the mother will help them with. The calves usually stay with their mother to be between one  and one and a half years old.

Like dogs, cats, and many other animals are those natural swimmer . It is not at all unusual for being able to see a moose jumping into a lake and swim in around 10 km / h . The ability to swim is innate in the moose, so even the calves can swim – even if it does not go as fast as that of an adult.

08In Sweden alone, there are between 300 000 to the 400 000 moose. Approximately 100,000 moose shot annually during moose hunting season, then approximately 100,000 new calves are born. You can find the moose in the entire country – except on Gotland ! Not only this; Sweden also has the densest populations of moose in the world. It also explains why Sweden is so famous for its moose.

A calf is up about 1.5 kg per day (!) After birth during the first months. In 7-8 months , the calf is drinking milk from his mother.
