Family and Personal Background of Venkaiah Naidu
Venkaiah Naidu was born to Rangaiah Naidu and Ramanamma, in the family of farmers at Chavatapalem in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh on July 1, 1949. After completing his graduation, Naidu pursued law from Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. Belonging to the lower class family, he could empathise with the problems of the common man especially the farmers and the people of backward classes.
Since childhood, he was interested in politics. Venkaiah Naidu joined ABVP in 1973 as a student leader. Venkaiah Naidu gained immense popularity because of his outspoken nature and great communication skills.
Political Career of Venkaiah Naidu
Being interested in politics since childhood, Venkaiah Naidu actively participated in ‘Jai Andhra Movement’ of 1972. His leadership skills boosted his political career and he won the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections twice in 1978 and 1983 from Udayagiri constituency.
It is Naidu’s oratory skills that make him stand apart from other members of his party. Venkaiah Naidu used his tactics to get in contact with the top leaders of the party. It was these skills that helped him moving up the position in the party and finally to the Union cabinet. This is for the second time that he has become the cabinet minister. He served as Union minister for rural development in the ministry of Vajpayee Government.
Venkaiah Naidu joined the BJP in 1980. Prior to it, he was the state president of the Janata Yuva Morcha for a period of three years. Naidu believes that in order to succeed as a leader, one need to be committed to an ideology.
A strong conviction is a driving force to success. It was his conviction that got him elected to Rajya Sabha thrice in 1998, 2004 and 2010. Unlike other politicians hailing from South India, Naidu learnt Hindi and addressed many rallies in North India.
In 2002, Venkaiah Naidu was appointed as the national President of the party. During this time, he went on an all India tour to meet the party heads of all the states. His focus was to convey to people the initiatives taken by the NDA government for their welfare and development.
He also launched the `Gaon Chalo Abhiyan’ wherein the party leaders reached out to the remote people living in the remote villages and discussed with them the programmes undertaken by Vajpayee government.
He was also instrumental in helping BJP form alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a strong regional party. During the discussions held about bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in Rajya Sabha, Naidu fought for the Seemandhra people.
But after the party’s defeat in the 2004 elections, Naidu had to resign from the post. The landslide victory of BJP in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, gave Naidu the post of Union Minister in the government. After taking charge as the cabinet minister, Naidu said that his priority will be to ensure housing facilities for all by 2020. For this, the government will create smart cities and also reduce the interest on home loans.
Apart from Politics
During his tenure, he launched many reforms and schemes for the development of the rural classes. One such scheme was ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana’. He also tried to rope in multinational companies for the various projects related to rural development. To serve the poor and downtrodden of his hometown Nellore, Naidu initiated a social service organisation called ‘Swarna Bharath Trust’. The trust provides education to the needy children. It also imparts employment training to women and the youth.
